To build your Tiger Supercat kit car you will need
a New Comprehensive Kit of parts and “Donor” items
taken from a Ford Sierra and a Mondeo (if you plan to use the
16 valve engine).
Although it is feasible to buy a complete running car and remove
the parts needed, most people buy the Donor items from Chester
Sportscars and then strip, clean and refurbish these before starting
the build.
Some things only need checking, degreasing and repainting. This
would apply to say the steering column, pedal box, differential
and gearbox.
Other components e.g. the rear axle, drive shafts and front hubs
are usually stripped, the bearings, seals and boots examined, then
the metal parts are wire brushed, primed and painted before reassembly.
Anything to do with brakes, steering and suspension
should be replaced with new or factory reconditioned items. There
should be no compromise here.
A new steering rack, ball joints, springs & dampers,
bushes and bolts are supplied in the kit and
Chester Sportscars can supply new brake cylinders & calipers,
new discs, pads, braided hoses and handbrake cables.
Engines, if taken from a running car, may be re-usable without
further work. However, despite the Zetec engine being an excellent
design, we strongly recommend that it is stripped, the aluminium
cylinder head reconditioned, the water pump and cam belt replaced
and the engine reassembled with new gaskets and bolts.
Tuning work, camshafts and followers, new big end
bolts & bearings,
a short sump & pickup
(essential for adequate ground clearance), a steel balanced flywheel
and new clutch (for a light feel pedal) can also be fitted at
this time, again CSC will be pleased to advise and help.
By taking the majority of the Donor parts from one vehicle,
it is possible to avoid a “Q” Registration Plate
being issued when the vehicle is Road Registered; Chester Sportscars
will include the necessary documentation with every Donor Pack
purchased.
Finally, some people ask “Why a Ford car for the Donor
?”
Well, the Ford Sierra, Granada, Escort and Mondeo, all used an
engine / gearbox combination suitable or adaptable for rear wheel
drive, and being plentiful, new parts can be bought relatively
cheaply or found in car breakers. Just imagine the cost if the
Donor was a Porsche ?
